Unsustainable land use is a central sustainability problem. With a persistently high irretrievable use, especially of green fields, we deprive future generations of our current environment.
In Germany, nearly half of the settlement and transport area is sealed. The long-term objective of the German Federal Government's Sustainability Strategy is to reduce the daily use of new settlements and traffic areas to 30 ha per day by 2020. If this target is reduced to Rhineland-Palatinate, this would correspond to a reduction target of 1.4 ha / day in 2020.
What we need are other forms of settlement patterns, a different system of traffic and energetic infrastructure and new ways for sustainable finance, management and planning.
The Center for Land Research aims to contribute to a conscious awareness of land use policy through its work.
